Culinary Career Night a Huge Success!

20181129_181155_1.jpg

A number of new faces joined us at Teen Services on Thursday, November 29th for a special evening with two of Sonoma’s culinary stars: Sondra Bernstein (the girl and the fig) and Nima Sherpa (Sonoma Grille). Both had interesting journeys to share and advice to offer to the young adults who came to learn a bit more about the culinary field.

A typical summer day at TSS…

It was not unusual that there was a high level of energy with only a few days before our annual fundraiser – Cowboy Cab – but this day was beyond the expected.

Joellyn, TSS Administrative Assistant, was creating table numbers for Cowboy Cab. Lovin’ Oven Coordinator Carol was in the kitchen getting things ready for cooking for the homeless shelter. Six girls sat around a table set up in front of the TV screen teaching Norma, Teen Center Coordinator, how to decorate Cowboy Cab cookies.  Four new job coaches arrived to join the summer cohort who were having their first RTW workshop in the classroom. And there was a bearded dragon in our accountant’s office.

To explain the latter… Merlise, our accountant, is heading off on vacation and TSS is dragon-sitting while Merlise is away.

Operation Bicycle visits Stuart Creek!
Teens_at_Stuart_Creek2.jpg
On May 10th, Adrian loaded up the van and headed off to a new place to explore – Stuart Creek in Glen Ellen. When they arrived, they were met by TSS board members Judy Scotchmoor and Doug Hanford plus Tony Nelson, a biologist and program manager with the Sonoma Land Trust.

Tony__Doug__and_the_teens_from_Teen_Services_Sonoma2.jpgAfter some brief introductions, Tony started off the conversation by talking about the steelhead trout that used to frequent Stuart Creek and the decision to re-route the creek in the hopes that they will return.

Doug, the landscape engineer in charge of the project, talked about the challenges his company faced, including bringing in 4-ton boulders to prevent the creek from straying from its new path.

After a few questions from the boys, there was ample opportunity to explore the creek and perhaps the highlight was the discovery by Filemon of some tadpoles upstream. Now we will await news from Tony as he waits to see what kind of frog is inhabiting the creek!!

Teens visit KPIX

A group of our teens recently visited the KPIX News in San Francisco. They were able to meet with the anchors and learn what goes into creating the broadcasts.
